The UK Government has expanded mental health support for children and young people, by infusing a further £3m to establish more early support hubs across the country.

These hubs aim to provide early interventions and improve access to mental health services, potentially easing the strain on NHS resources.

They will offer a range of services, including psychological therapies, specialist advice, and support for wider issues that may impact mental health.

The aim is to facilitate early-stage mental health assistance, addressing issues such as psychological distress, sexual health, and academic pressures, among others.

Originally, the government pledged £4.92m in October 2023 for ten early support hubs. The recent injection of an extra £3m will extend the programme, increasing the hub count to 24 from Exeter to Liverpool.

The support centres cater to those aged 11 to 25, particularly targeting individuals who may not qualify for NHS support.

UK Mental Health Minister Maria Caulfield said: “This government is taking the long-term decisions needed to make our healthcare system faster, simpler and fairer. Mental health support for our young people is a key part of that.

“No child or young person should suffer alone, and this additional funding for 24 mental health hubs will improve access and bring in more staff and experts who can help those who need it the most.

“This will build on the brilliant work they already do, and supports our ongoing work to make sure every person has access to the highest quality mental health services.”

The hubs will also provide a physical space for those experiencing anxiety, stress, or worry, offering a place to turn to at the onset of mental health challenges.

Last year, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) unveiled plans to establish ten specialist obesity clinics in England to serve children and young people.
