The Western Australia (WA) Government has announced the appointment of design and construction company WeBuild as the managing contractor for the new A$1.8bn ($1.17bn) Women and Babies Hospital project.

This development aims to replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital and expand healthcare services for women, newborns, and families in the state.

The new facility will provide inpatient services for gynaecology and maternity patients, a neonatology unit for newborns requiring specialised care, a family birthing centre, operating theatres, and outpatient clinics.

The project is expected to generate more than 1,400 jobs during the construction phase.

Located within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct, the new hospital will enhance access for women and newborns in the region through the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

It will offer expanded services and choices, replacing the services currently provided by the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

The anticipated completion date for the hospital is 2029.

Construction is set to begin later this year, starting with the erection of the first multi-deck car park.

Georgiou Group secured the contract for this component in January 2025. The plan includes approximately 2,500 new car bays for the precinct, with temporary offsite parking arrangements to accommodate hospital precinct workers during the construction period.

Earlier this year, the WA Government released the tender for the main works of the Mullewa Hospital redevelopment.

This project, which has involved consultation with the local community, is expected to deliver a range of regional health services.
