The top five companies accounted for 27% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Koninklijke Philips filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the healthcare industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 16 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 1 in the previous quarter. It was followed by DexCom with 9 environmental sustainability patent filings, Sun Yat-sen University (6 filings), and Smith & Nephew (5 filings) in Q2 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 47% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the healthcare industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 47%, followed by China (34%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by the US was 6% lower than the 52% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
