The cities of Des Moines and Sioux are each home to two of Iowa’s ten largest general hospitals, with the state’s remaining top six hospitals located in Iowa City, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Mason City and Council Bluffs.

Hospital Management has listed Iowa’s ten largest hospitals based on numbers of beds as of last year, using GlobalData’s research.

1. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics – 840 beds

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a state-owned hospital located in Iowa City, is Iowa’s largest hospital, with 860 beds. It is operated by the state’s most comprehensive academic health system University of Iowa (UI) Health Care and serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Iowa Roy J and Lucille A Carver College of Medicine.

Recognised as a regional referral centre, the multi-speciality hospital campus is also home to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, one of the best paediatric facilities in the state.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is designated as Iowa’s only Level I trauma centre for both adults and children. It is nationally ranked in the adult ophthalmology and otolaryngology specialities and in seven paediatric specialities, namely neonatology, cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, orthopaedics, nephrology, pulmonology and lung surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.

2. MercyOne Des Moines Medical Centre – 696 beds

The MercyOne Des Moines Medical Centre in Des Moines is the second largest hospital in Iowa, with 696 licensed beds. It is one of four Catholic medical centres operated by non-profit health system MercyOne Central Iowa.

The UnityPoint Health-St Luke’s Hospital is a 532-bed general medical and surgical facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is owned and operated by non-profit health system UnityPoint Health.  

The full-service acute care hospital is rated as high-performing in the adult orthopaedics speciality, as well as procedures and conditions related to colon cancer surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, cardiac arrest, aortic valve and heart bypass surgery, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure, maternity care, hip fracture, and hip and knee replacement.

4. Genesis Medical Centre-Davenport – 502 beds

The Genesis Medical Centre in Davenport is a general medical and surgical facility with 502 impatient beds. It is run by Genesis Health System, a non-profit health system that serves 17 counties in Iowa and Illinois.

Clinical areas of excellence at the multi-speciality hospital include neonatal care, orthopaedic and robotic surgery, cancer and cardiac care, weight management, and women’s health and paediatric services.

Genesis Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in prostate cancer surgery and stroke management. It is also designated as a Level II trauma centre and home to a Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

5. Mercy Medical Centre-Cedar Rapids – 445 beds

The Mercy Medical Centre is a 445-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Cedar Rapids. Owned and operated by non-profit health system Mercy, it is recognised as a Level III trauma centre.

The full-service acute care hospital is recognised for clinical excellence in cardiovascular care and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, COPD, hip fracture, and hip and knee replacement.

6. UnityPoint Health-Iowa Methodist Medical Centre – 370 beds

The UnityPoint Health-Iowa Methodist Medical Centre is a 370-bed acute care hospital in Des Moines. Owned and operated by UnityPoint Health, it specialises in a wide range of clinical areas, including plastic surgery, preventive medicine, psychiatry, radiology and general surgery.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to colon cancer surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, cardiac arrest, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure, hip fracture, hip and knee replacement, and COPD.

7. MercyOne Waterloo Medical Centre – 366 beds

The MercyOne Waterloo Medical Centre is a 366-bed general medical and surgical facility in Waterloo, Iowa.

The multi-speciality hospital is run by MercyOne, an integrated non-profit health system that was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between two Catholic healthcare organisations, Trinity Health and CommonSpirit Health.

Waterloo Medical Centre is home to the region’s only Level II NICU and provides a full range of emergency services, including ground and air ambulance services. It is also rated as high-performing in procedures and conditions related to maternity care.

8. MercyOne North Iowa Medical Centre – 342 beds

Also operated by MercyOne is the MercyOne North Iowa Medical Centre, a 342-bed general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital. Located in Mason City, the facility serves as a tertiary referral hospital for people in 15 counties across northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.

The multi-speciality medical centre is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to kidney failure, stroke care and COPD. Its other areas of clinical expertise include cancer care, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, gastroenterology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, pulmonology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

9. CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs – 278 beds

CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs is a 278-bed general acute care hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It is run by CHI Health, a division of non-profit health system CommonSpirit Health.

The full-service acute care facility is rated as high-performing in procedures and conditions related to heart failure. It is also recognised for expertise in comprehensive cardiovascular care, behavioural health, cancer care, orthopaedics, diagnostic imaging, weight management, and women’s health and maternity services.

10. MercyOne Siouxland Medical Centre – 238 beds

The main campus of the MercyOne Siouxland Medical Centre, located in Sioux City, has 238 medical and surgical beds. Operated by MercyOne, the medical centre also owns rural hospitals in Primghar, Iowa.

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart failure, kidney failure and COPD. It also serves as western Iowa’s only Level II trauma centre and provides emergency services to rural areas through its helicopter ambulance service, MercyOne Air Med.
