The US state of Massachusetts had 102 registered hospitals as of December last year.

The city of Boston is home to five of the state’s ten largest general acute care hospitals, while the remaining top five hospitals are located in Worcester, Springfield, South Weymouth, Lowell and New Bedford.

The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston is the largest hospital in Massachusetts, with 1,035 beds.

4. Baystate Medical Centre – 716 beds

The hospital is part of Baystate Health, a non-profit integrated health system based in Springfield. The medical centre houses a Level I trauma centre and the Baystate Children’s Hospital.

The multi-speciality hospital admitted 24,367 patients and saw 120,811 emergency visits last year. It houses the busiest trauma and emergency service centre in New England.

Boston Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in two adult specialities, geriatrics and neurology/neurosurgery, as well as in procedures and conditions related to heart failure, maternity care, stroke management and COPD.

7. South Shore Hospital – 455 beds

The South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, is a general medical and surgical facility with 455 beds.

It is the flagship hospital campus of South Shore Health, a non-profit health system based in southern Massachusetts. Designated as a Level II trauma centre, the acute care hospital admits more than 57,000 emergency patients a year.

South Shore Hospital is rated as high-performing in the adult speciality of urology, as well as procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, COPD, and lung and colon cancer surgery.

8. Lowell General Hospital – 445 beds

The Lowell General Hospital is a 445-bed general acute care community hospital located in Lowell. It is operated by Tufts Medicine, a non-profit, integrated health system affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to diabetes, heart failure and kidney failure.

9. St Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford – 423 beds

The St Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford is a multi-speciality medical and surgical facility with 423 beds.

It is the largest of the three general acute care hospitals operated by Southcoast Health, a non-profit healthcare provider based in southeastern Massachusetts. The hospital specialises in neurosurgery, cardiology, children’s health services, orthopaedic surgery and general surgery.

St Luke’s Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, maternity care, colon cancer surgery and COPD.

10. Tufts Medical Centre – 415 beds

The Tufts Medical Centre in Boston, Massachusetts, is a 415-bed general acute care facility and the principal teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine.
