The cities of St Louis and Springfield are home to five and two of the ten biggest general hospitals in the state, respectively. The remaining top three hospitals are located in Bridgeton, Kansas City and Chesterfield.

1. Barnes-Jewish Hospital – 1,278 beds

Barnes-Jewish Hospital, located in St Louis, is the biggest hospital in Missouri, with 1,278 beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is affiliated with the Washington University School of Medicine and is the largest of the 15 hospitals operated by BJC HealthCare, a non-profit academic health system that serves greater St. Louis, southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri regions in the US.  

Barnes-Jewish Hospital admitted 52,982 patients and saw 73,409 emergency visits in 2021. It is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialities, including cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, ENT, geriatrics, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.

2. Mercy Hospital Springfield – 886 beds

Mercy Hospital Springfield, located in Springfield, is Missouri’s second-biggest hospital, with 886 beds.

The multi-speciality general medical and surgical facility is run by Mercy, a non-profit health system that operates 40 hospitals in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas.

Mercy Hospital Springfield is designated as a Level I trauma and burn centre and a Level 2 stroke centre. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes, kidney failure, colon cancer surgery, hip and knee replacement, stroke management and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

3. Mercy Hospital St Louis – 859 beds

The Mercy Hospital St Louis, located in St Louis, is a multi-speciality, general acute care hospital with 859 inpatient beds.

The hospital is designated as a Level 1 trauma and stroke centre, and an adult and paediatric burn centre. It also houses a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The hospital saw 79,195 emergency visits in 2021.

Mercy Hospital St. Louis is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of diabetes and endocrinology and is rated as high-performing in the specialities of gastroenterology and GI surgery, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

4. Mercy Hospital South – 767 beds

Mercy Hospital South, also operated by the non-profit health system Mercy, is a 767-bed general medical and surgical facility in St Louis.

The multi-speciality hospital is recognised as a Level 1 stroke centre and Level 2 trauma centre. It also houses a Level II NICU. The hospital witnessed 63,181 emergency visits in 2021.

Mercy Hospital South is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, hip and knee replacement, stroke management and COPD.

5. Cox Medical Centers South Hospital – 706 beds

Cox Medical Centers South Hospital, located in Springfield, has 706 licensed beds, including 528 medical/surgical beds, and 86 intensive care and 34 NICU beds.

The multi-speciality medical campus houses a Level I trauma centre, the Dee Ann White Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Jared Neuroscience Center. It is the largest of the six hospital campuses operated by CoxHealth, a non-profit health system based in south-west Missouri.

Cox Medical Centers South Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, colon cancer surgery, stroke management, COPD, and hip and knee replacement.

6. SSM Health DePaul Hospital-St Louis – 523 beds

SSM Health DePaul Hospital-St Louis is a 523-bed general acute care hospital located in Bridgeton.

The multi-speciality hospital is designated as a Level II trauma and comprehensive stroke centre. It is run by SSM Health, a Catholic, non-profit health system that comprises 23 hospitals in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.   

SSM Health DePaul Hospital-St Louis is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management, knee replacement and COPD.

7. Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City – 508 beds

Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital with 508 licensed beds.

Affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, it is the flagship facility of Saint Luke’s Health System, a faith-based, non-profit health system that includes 16 hospitals and campuses across the Kansas City region.

Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of cardiology and heart surgery and is rated as high-performing in the specialities of gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

8. SSM Health St Mary’s Hospital-St Louis – 495 beds

The SSM Health St Mary’s Hospital-St Louis is a 495-bed general acute care hospital located in Richmond Heights, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is operated by the non-profit health system, SSM Health. It is a certified stroke centre and is recognised for clinical excellence in the field of high-risk pregnancy care and foetal surgery.

9. St. Luke’s Hospital-Chesterfield – 493 beds

The St. Luke’s Hospital, located in Chesterfield, is a multi-speciality medical and surgical facility with 493 licensed beds.

Operated by BJC HealthCare, the multi-speciality hospital admitted 19,954 patients and saw 36,595 emergency visits in 2021.

The Missouri Baptist Medical Center is rated as high-performing in three adult specialities, including geriatrics, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery.
