The state of Georgia, US, had 111 registered general acute care hospitals with 21,809 licensed beds, as of December 2021.

The city of Atlanta is home to five of the ten biggest general acute care hospitals in the state while the remaining top five hospitals are in Albany, Macon, Marietta, Columbus and Gainesville.

1. Grady Memorial Hospital – 953 beds

The 953-bed Grady Memorial Hospital, located in downtown Atlanta, is the biggest general hospital in Georgia.

The acute care teaching hospital is affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine and the Morehouse School of Medicine. It is the flagship hospital campus of Grady Health System, one of the largest public healthcare systems in the south-east US.

Grady Memorial Hospital treats more than 700,000 patients a year and is designated as a Level I trauma, stroke and burn care centre. It provides emergency and surgical care in as many as 80 medical specialities. 2. Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center – 762 beds

The Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center comprising two campuses in downtown Atlanta and East Point, is the second biggest hospital in Georgia, with a combined 762 licensed beds.

The 557-bed general acute care hospital is designated as a Level II trauma centre and has 23 operating rooms, a 32-bed adult ICU and a Level III neonatal ICU. Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville is rated high performing in 13 adult procedures and conditions, including lung and colon cancer surgery, aortic valve and heart bypass surgery, kidney failure, stroke management, hip and knee replacement, pneumonia and COPD.
