Sullivan & Cromwell and Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice have emerged as the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers by value and volume, respectively, in the South & Central American (SCA) region in 2023, as per GlobalData’s latest legal advisers league table. 

An analysis of the deals database by GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed that Sullivan & Cromwell secured the leading position by advising on M&A deals worth $16.5bn. 

In terms of deal volume, Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice topped the ranking list by advising on 17 deals. 

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice recorded a marginal improvement in the number of deals advised and went ahead from occupying the second position by volume in 2022 to top the chart by this metric in 2023. 

“Meanwhile, Sullivan & Cromwell was among the only three advisers with more than $10bn in total deal value during the year and the only one to surpass the $15bn mark.” 

Appleby Global Group occupied the second place by value with advisory on $14.4bn worth of M&A deals.

McCarthy Tetrault and O’Melveny & Myers secured the third and fourth positions, by advising on $10.3bn and $7.4bn M&A deals, respectively. 

Kirkland & Ellis held the fifth spot in the value rankings, having advised on M&A deals worth $5.7bn. 

In the volume category, Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice was followed by Demarest Advogados as well as Bronstein, Zilberberg, Chueiri & Potenza Advogados, with each advising on 13 deals.  

Next were Madrona Fialho Advogados and Pinheiro Neto Advogados with 12 and 11 deals, respectively.
