Acute Behavioral Health (ABH) has acquired Oakwood Treatment Center, a psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) in North Carolina, US.

Previously part of the Nova Behavioral Health network, the facility in Kinston will operate under new ownership and a new name while continuing to serve the local community.

Oakwood offers out-of-home treatment for patients aged 12-17 years who require intensive care, as determined by mental health and social service providers.

During treatment, they reside in separate quarters within a highly supervised environment.

A psychiatrist oversees the treatment while licensed clinicians provide intensive therapy services. Nursing care is available 24/7, and all youths participate in grade-level appropriate educational programming.

ABH CEO Mike McCulla said: “It’s a privilege to be able to provide continuity of care and behavioural health services for youth challenged with severe emotional and psychiatric needs through the Oakwood Treatment Center.

“Oakwood’s treatment centre design, team culture and values align with our mission and the ability to provide intensive treatment services for young people with a focus on lowering levels of care as quickly as clinically possible and ultimately, reunifying them back into a safe home environment.”

ABH operates a network of inpatient PRTFs and has outpatient behavioural health programmes for young people.

Its initiatives align with the Federal Family First Prevention Services Act, which focuses on keeping children with their families and reducing placements in state custody for treatment access.

In July 2022, ABH acquired Hallmark Youthcare, Virginia’s short-term residential treatment programme. The acquisition included 82 inpatient PRTF beds for youths with behavioural and mental health needs.
