US-based not-for-profit integrated health system Sutter Health is to make Abridge’s generative AI clinical documentation platform available to its physicians in California.

The move aims to enhance patient experiences by allowing more focused face-to-face interactions with clinicians.

Abridge’s platform helps generate real-time draft notes from clinical conversations and allows them to flow directly into the electronic health record, which is then reviewed and verified by the clinicians.

The technology is expected to lessen the cognitive load on physicians and advanced practice clinicians, potentially reducing clinician burnout.

Sutter’s use of Abridge’s platform is part of its efforts to serve a diverse patient population, as the solution currently supports more than 14 languages and 50 specialities.

Sutter Health chief digital officer Laura Wilt said: “The technology is designed to fit easily into our teams’ day-to-day workflows inside Epic and will help us better serve our patients by eliminating the burden of clinical documentation that can detract from patient-clinician interactions.”

Sutter’s use of the Abridge system will allow it to integrate patient-facing summaries into the electronic medical record.

This will address the challenge of patients forgetting around 40%-80% of medical information post-consultation, which has been highlighted in studies.

Abridge CEO and founder Dr Shiv Rao said: “Clinicians often don’t have time to write detailed patient instructions and summaries that reflect the details from their conversation that would most benefit the patient.

“This is a prime use case for generative AI, and it’s a privilege to team up with those from Sutter Health on this new patient-centred initiative.”

Sutter Health’s partnership with Abridge follows the implementation of the AI platform at several other health systems, including Emory Healthcare, UPMC and The University of Kansas Health System.

The University of California’s academic health system, UCI Health, recently adopted Abridge’s generative AI solution to facilitate clinical documentation work.
