US-based Adena Health has introduced its own ambulance service designed to facilitate patient transport within its health system.

This initiative aims to complement the existing private transport services and address the increasing community needs by minimising medical transportation wait times between hospitals.

The Adena Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is scheduled to commence operations in mid-February.

Adena president and CEO Jeff Graham said: “It’s the type of innovation and commitment to our patient experience that demonstrates who we are at Adena.”

The service will enable patient transfers between Adena’s hospitals in Greenfield, Chillicothe, Washington Court House, and Waverly.

It will also provide transport assistance for patients moving between Adena’s hospitals and nearby nursing homes.

The fleet of two ambulances will not respond to 911 calls or transport patients to hospitals outside of the Adena network.

For external transportation needs, Adena will continue to use its private transport service partner.

The launch of the new service is expected to bring several benefits, such as creating new jobs and increasing the availability of emergency department and inpatient unit rooms at Adena facilities.

Operating from a dispatch centre located in the emergency department at Adena Regional Medical Center, the service will be staffed by dispatchers. It will operate round-the-clock, seven days a week.

The development of Adena’s in-house ambulance service has been in consideration for the past two years.

The availability of a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and support from the Adena Health Foundation have been instrumental in advancing this project.

Adena’s EMS manager Josh Riley, alongside emergency services and behavioural health director Brooke Johnson, have played significant roles in adapting the plan that will guide the service’s operations.

Johnson said: “We expect to be able to handle about 75% of our health system’s internal transportation volume through Adena EMS.”
