Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH) in the UK has initiated construction works on the £1.9m ($2.35m) Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

This Macmillan-funded facility, the first in North West Surrey, aims to provide non-clinical support for cancer patients.

It will offer a welcoming space within Ashford Hospital, designed to serve the needs of individuals living with and beyond cancer.

The facility will also offer personalised advice and support, addressing various challenges faced by the individuals from the moment of diagnosis.

ASPH group chief executive Louise Stead said: “I’m so excited to see the start of this new development at Ashford Hospital, which complements the provision at Royal Surrey. It will give our cancer patients a more holistic approach to living with and beyond cancer.

“The purpose-built facility will provide a much-needed space, closer to home, where experts and trained volunteers will listen, answer questions, and offer personalised information and support to help manage the impact of cancer.”

The new centre will provide a range of services, including counselling, complementary therapies, exercise classes, and support groups.

Macmillan has committed to raising the necessary funds for the project, which relies heavily on voluntary contributions.

The Cancer Support Centre is expected to open its doors in early 2025.

Macmillan Cancer Support chief engagement officer Sonia Sudhakar said: “We know that being diagnosed with cancer can affect so many different areas of your life, from relationships to finance.

“Every cancer experience is different, and we want to make sure people get the support that’s right for them when they need it most. With cancer information and emotional and financial support all under one roof, this fantastic new centre brings us one step closer to making that happen.”
