US-based non-profit health system Aspirus Health has announced plans for a $40m renovation and expansion project at Aspirus Merrill Hospital in Merrill, Wisconsin.

Expected to begin later this year, the project aims to improve the hospital’s existing efficiency, access and capabilities to offer an enhanced patient experience.

The expansion plan includes increasing the number of inpatient beds from ten to 20, alongside a complete reconstruction of inpatient rooms.

It will aim to improve the hospital’s rehabilitation, imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services, as well as upgrade the stairwells, main floor and offices.

The expansion project is part of Aspirus’ efforts to meet changing healthcare needs in Merrill and the surrounding communities.

It is part of the company’s strategy to maintain a Critical Access Hospital in the city as more US state populations transition to Medicare.

Aspirus Central Region president Jeff Wicklander said: “The healthcare landscape has encountered unprecedented challenges over the past four years, exerting immense pressure on healthcare systems across the nation.

“Despite these obstacles, Aspirus has thrived, which is a testament to strategic foresight, thoughtful decision-making, and a relentless commitment to efficiency and effectiveness.

“We are excited to improve and expand care locally while providing a boost to the local economy.”

Aspirus Merrill Hospital currently offers inpatient care, round-the-clock emergency care and walk-in appointments at Aspirus’ Urgent Care clinic.

It also provides a range of speciality care services such as cancer care, outpatient surgical procedures, radiology and rehabilitation.

Aspirus is a non-profit community-directed health system that serves regions across north-eastern Minnesota, northern and central Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The health system employs nearly 14,000 team members, including 1,300 physicians and advanced practice clinicians, across 19 hospitals and 130 outpatient locations.

Last year, it began construction work on the expansion of the emergency department at its Aspirus Wausau Hospital facility in Wisconsin.
