Aspirus Wausau Hospital is set to undergo an expansion to address the increasing demand for critical care and provide specialised health services.

This project, which will be carried out in multiple phases, is set to commence in early 2025.

Aspirus president and CEO Matt Heywood said: “This expansion positions Aspirus Wausau Hospital as the destination for specialised health care in Northcentral Wisconsin.

“It is a direct response to the growing needs of our patients and communities. By increasing capacity and access to advanced technology, we are ensuring timely care and creating efficiencies that benefit everyone.”

The development will introduce an additional 48 intermediate care beds and an observation unit with 16 beds, catering to the growing patient needs. It also includes plans for future intensive care unit expansion.

A new fixed PET/CT scanner will be installed to improve cancer services and reduce the need for patient travel for critical imaging.

The redesigned spaces will help to support care teams to deliver improved patient outcomes while the upgraded spaces are expected to meet the needs of the patients and enhance efficiency.

Heywood added: “This expansion is designed for flexibility and foresight. It will enhance patient flow, improve care transitions, and strengthen collaboration across our specialised care teams.

“By providing better tools and resources, we are empowering our staff to deliver the highest level of care efficiently and effectively.”

With an investment of $227m, Aspirus is preparing for future healthcare challenges, including an ageing population and the growing complexity of patient care.

The expansion will also prepare for growth opportunities in neuroscience and heart care.
