Australian private hospital Cairns Private Hospital has announced a $11.5m (A$18m) expansion to cater to the demand for healthcare services in the Far North Queensland region.

The expansion project includes construction of two new theatres as well as a new advanced sterilising department.

The new operating theatres will bring the hospital’s total number of theatres to nine.

Construction work on the new theatres is expected commence next month and the first new theatre is anticipated to begin operations in mid-2024.

Cairns Private Hospital stated that the new operation theatres will result in increased surgeries in specialties, that include plastics, orthopaedics, vascular, ENT, urology, and general surgery.

Cairns Private Hospital CEO Ben Tooth expects that these theatres will be well utilised to address the high demand for operating theatres in the region.

Tooth said: “Cairns Private Hospital has experienced significant surgical growth since opening our seventh theatre four years ago, to the point that we’re even performing certain elective surgeries on Saturdays to cater for demand and to support specialist FIFO surgeons.

“I thank Ramsay Health Care for this investment in Cairns Private Hospital and the communities of Far North Queensland.”

Ramsay Health Care is investing in its people, in addition to the investment in Cairns Private Hospital.

Tooth added: “Ramsay Health Care has been investing heavily in initiatives to attract, retain and upskill our health care workers to ensure we can continue to offer the best in patient care.”
