US-based healthcare system Centra and Lifepoint Behavioral Health have announced a joint venture partnership for the construction of a new inpatient behavioural health hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Lifepoint Behavioral Health is a business unit of Lifepoint Health.

The nearly 75,000ft2, 72-bed Centra Behavioral Health Hospital will offer services for individuals with mental health issues.

The facility will be designed to create a therapeutic environment for patients. It will feature open spaces with amenities, such as spacious patient rooms, community spaces, courtyards, and clinical spaces to assist patients and families.

Centra president CEO Amy Carrier said: “Both Centra and Lifepoint share a strong commitment to clinical excellence and innovation.

“We are pleased to partner with Lifepoint again as we expand access to critically needed speciality care in our region. We know that there is a significant need for greater access to inpatient behavioural health services across the country, and we look forward to bringing this level of care to more of our patients here in central Virginia.”

Last fall, Centra and Lifepoint Health’s another business subsidiary Lifepoint Rehabilitation , established a separate joint venture collaboration to build a 50-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital.

This hospital will treat patients suffering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, complicated neurological illnesses, orthopaedic issues, multiple trauma, amputation, and other injuries or disorders affecting a patient’s functional or cognitive skills.

Both the facilities will be built in Lynchburg on the Simon’s Run site that was purchased by Centra in 2017. Consequently, they will form a new speciality care medical complex.

Subject to customary regulatory approvals, construction for the inpatient rehabilitation facility is estimated to start in the spring of next year, with an anticipated opening in 2025.

The construction of the new behavioural health hospital is scheduled to commence in the summer of 2024.

Once completed, Centra Behavioral Health Hospital will join the growing network of Lifepoint Behavioral Health’s behavioural health hospitals and units around the country.
