Chelsea Hospital has announced the closing down of its adult inpatient behavioural health unit in Michigan, reported WEMU.

The shutdown is slated to be completed by end of this year.

The unit has been providing care to patients experiencing depression, trauma, substance abuse and other mental health issues.

Established in 1970, the 133-bed Chelsea Hospital is a joint venture between the University of Michigan Health and Trinity Health System.

Persistent workforce challenges and other regulatory issues present before the Covid-19 pandemic were cited as reasons for the current shutdown.

As per the report, the resources currently employed at the behavioural health unit will be transferred to Trinity Health Ann Arbor, a hospital under the Trinity Health System.

Chelsea Hospital president Ben Miles said: “We’re going to have the ability to have more predictable staffing. We’re going to be able to increase the number of beds on our Ann Arbor campus.”

The move is expected to develop an effective care model in the long run, added Miles.

Trinity Health System’s Trinity Health Ann Arbor is a 537-bed teaching hospital spanning over a 340-acre campus in Michigan.

Services provided by the hospital include maternity services, cancer care, emergency care, neurosciences, cardiovascular care, behavioural health services, laboratory services, among others.

In May last year, Trinity Health System secured property and funding to construct a 20,000ft² hospital in St. Clairsville, Ohio, US.
