China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) in Taiwan has announced the development of a new comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted Physician system leveraging generative AI technology from Google Cloud.

This system is designed to support healthcare professionals in various aspects, including treatment planning, disease diagnosis, medical research and patient education.

It utilises Google Cloud’s generative AI technology, including the large language model ‘MedLM’, which is built on Med-PaLM 2.

The partnership between CMUH and Google Cloud further aims to introduce assistive tools for precision cancer treatment, including ‘Customized Cancer Treatment Guidelines’ and ‘Cancer Therapy Q&As’.

These tools will help streamline the information-gathering process and provide accurate data swiftly while assisting in formulating cancer treatment strategies and delivering tailored patient information.

According to CMUH superintendent professor Der-Yang Cho, MedLM’s precision in data analysis is crucial for developing rapid treatment plans, among other areas.

Der-Yang Cho added: “We are excited about this collaboration, which positions smart hospitals in Taiwan at the forefront of providing more precision- and safety-oriented support to healthcare professionals and patients alike.”

Customized Cancer Treatment Guidelines leverage the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s guidelines, integrated with MedLM, to provide clinicians with pertinent information based on various factors such as patient staging, treatment methods, and risk evaluations.

It can be used for creating cancer treatment plans and for delivering personalised treatment recommendations, which can be reviewed/edited by clinicians for patients’ use.

Meanwhile, the Cancer Therapy Q&As application, which incorporates CMUH’s health educational content, has been optimised with MedLM, offering a knowledgeable system for addressing patient queries.

This advancement not only saves time for healthcare professionals but also ensures patients receive comprehensive treatment options, thereby improving clinical outcomes and patient engagement.

Google Cloud North Asia managing director Kathy Lee said: “In this remarkable era of gen AI, we are excited to collaborate with medical industry leaders that drive innovation through AI like CMUH and partner with them to build the future of healthcare in Taiwan.”
