American information technology company Cognizant has launched the initial set of healthcare large language model (LLM) solutions, leveraging Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (genAI) technology.

This move intends to transform healthcare administrative processes.

The LLM solutions, which use Google Cloud’s genAI solutions, such as its Vertex AI platform and Gemini models, have been developed as part of an existing partnership between Cognizant and Google Cloud.

The partnership was initiated in May 2023 and expanded in the following August.

It initially targeted administrative areas, such as appeals and grievances, as well as member and patient engagement.

The collaboration combines Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform with Cognizant’s AI expertise and healthcare industry knowledge.

Cognizant highlighted that the integration of genAI solutions into healthcare systems is a critical development, aimed at increasing efficiency and responsiveness within the sector’s complex processes.

These solutions are designed to optimise administrative tasks, improve operational speed, and increase the care quality provided to healthcare members.

They address four key high-cost workflows, including marketing operations, provider management, call centre operations, and contracting.

The appeals resolution assistant aims to revolutionise healthcare appeals management by automating the processes of data retrieval, analysis, and interpretation.

This AI-driven assistant is expected to enhance productivity and accuracy in appeals resolution, offering substantial improvements for healthcare payers.

In contract management, the solution automates review, generation, and configuration processes, potentially reducing contracting cycle times and production errors.

The marketing content assistant aids healthcare payer marketing teams by automating content creation for various initiatives, supporting consistent communications.

The health plan shopper tool helps healthcare members to select plans by integrating personal preferences, clinical profiles, and payer data, facilitating a better healthcare experience.

Google Cloud Healthcare and Life Sciences Industry director Amy Waldron said: “These new tailored solutions from Cognizant, utilising Google Cloud’s AI platform and Gemini models, can help reduce administrative burden and streamline manual tasks in areas like contracting, operations, appeals, and more. Solutions like these not only improve operational efficiency, but also, they can have a significant impact on satisfaction and access to care.”
