The Government of Queensland in Australia has initiated the construction of a significant expansion at Mackay Base Hospital under the A$250m ($162.5m) project.

With this initiative, healthcare services are planned to be enhanced with additional beds, modern birth suites, and specialised health units for women and children.

The expansion at Mackay Base Hospital is part of an ambitious plan to improve healthcare infrastructure across 11 hospitals in Queensland.

This development is set to provide 128 new beds and advanced facilities to address the growing healthcare demands in the region.

These additional beds will be distributed among paediatric, medical, and surgical wards, catering to a wide range of patient needs.

New birth suites, strategically located on the same floor as the surgical unit, are designed to ensure seamless care transitions for mothers and newborns.

The expansion is anticipated to open in the second half of 2026, following which the Women’s Health Unit and the Child and Adolescent Unit will be shifted to the contemporary wards.

Initial works at the site commenced in February this year, including essential service upgrades such as water and sewerage systems, as well as site clearance.

The Mackay Base Hospital expansion project is expected to create 610 local construction jobs in the area.

Additionally, plans are underway for a new multi-deck car park to accommodate the anticipated increase in hospital visitors and staff.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles said: “In Mackay, our $250m investment will give locals more access to hospital beds, as well as better treatment spaces across a range of important wards.

“And, the expansion will generate hundreds of good local jobs and training opportunities for the region.

“The 128 extra beds for Mackay are just some of the 3,300 being delivered by our government. An extra 239 beds are set to be delivered this year alone.”
