US-based academic health system Emory Healthcare is set to join Graphite, a software company focused on creating a comprehensive digital ecosystem for seamless health data exchange.

Emory Healthcare aims to become a governing member of Graphite, aligning with the company’s existing founding health systems to establish a common language for digital health.

This collaboration, which is subject to the finalisation of definitive agreements, is said to be driven by the increasing demand for clinical training data sets due to AI technologies.

Emory Healthcare chief information and digital officer Alistair Erskine said: “Digital health tools are evolving quickly, but implementation and deployment is always a challenge.

“This collaboration between the technology industry and healthcare systems is intended to serve as a seamless model for data exchange.

“Graphite has made a lot of progress and we’re eager to support the Graphite community and accelerate innovation inside Emory Healthcare.”

According to Graphite, standardisation has become crucial for ensuring safety, reliability, and interoperability in the clinical environment, which will be essential for future digital health solutions.

Graphite Health CEO Ries Robinson said: “As we navigate the complexities introduced by emergent technologies, like Generative AI, it’s imperative to have robust, standardised data sets for clinical training and decision support.

“This is yet another area where Graphite and its health system members will make a significant impact.”

Emory Healthcare brings its resources, including nearly 24,000 employees, 11 hospitals, and more than 3,450 physicians across 70 specialities, to the partnership.

Graphite’s founding health systems include Kaiser Permanente, Intermountain Healthcare, Presbyterian Healthcare Services, SSM Health, and, more recently, Banner Health.
