US-based healthcare workflow management company Forcura has unveiled a new feature that streamlines the patient referral process for post-acute care providers.

The feature, which is the first deployment of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology in Forcura’s cloud-based platform, summarises patient referral packets into a concise and shareable format.

Forcura said that the referral packets typically span hundreds of pages and are delivered to home-based care agencies as well as other post-acute organisations through various paper-based methods.

Due to this, clinicians and back-office staff are required to manually sift through all the documents to extract crucial patient information such as clinical condition, demographics, services ordered, payer, certifying physician, and referral source, the company noted.

This process often leads to delays in patient discharge from acute-care facilities and can increase the risk of hospital readmission.

Forcura said its new platform feature addresses this bottleneck by transforming the intake process with its Referral IQ product.

This platform allows users to manage all referrals from a single digital inbox, streamlining workflow through automated data capture.

The referral summary, which is a new addition to the Referral IQ product, employs HIPAA-compliant generative AI to present essential referral information in an easily digestible format.

This feature enables users to make intake decisions more quickly, reducing bottlenecks for their referral partners and speeding up the provision of care to patients who are in need.

Forcura said that the referral summary feature has already been trialled by some of the members of its client advisory board.

The early adopters provided strategic direction and also helped in identifying a range of use cases that can help in enhancing patient care in coding, planning, and communication with referral partners.

Reliant at Home is a recent addition to this advisory board.

As an early adopter of referral summary, Reliant’s chief operating officer Jana Lightfoot said that they were able to hit two company priorities, including reducing burden of its field staff and delivering care to patients “as quickly as possible”.

Forcura founder and CEO Craig Mandeville added: “I’m proud that our team quickly embraced this new tech and brought referral summary to market in rapid time.”
