The Government of India has laid the foundation stone of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rewari in the state of Haryana.

The new AIIMS is being established with an investment of approximately Rs16.5bn ($198.82m) on 203 acres of land at Rewari district’s Majra Mastil Bhalkhi village.

AIIMS Rewari will have a 750-bed hospital complex, which includes a 100-seat medical college, a 30-bed AYUSH block and a 60-seat nursing college.

In addition, the hospital complex will feature residential facilities for faculty and staff, undergraduate and postgraduate student hostels, and various amenities such as a night shelter, guest houses, auditoriums, and shopping complexes.

The hospital will offer patient care services across 17 super-speciality and 18 speciality departments.

These include cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, urology, burns and plastic surgery, neurosurgery, endocrinology, and medical and surgical oncology, among others.

In addition, the hospital’s speciality block will house 360 beds, while the super-speciality unit will have 215 beds.

The institute will also feature a 30-bed Emergency & Trauma Centre, a 75-bed intensive care unit, 16 modular operation theatres, two minor operation theatres, a blood bank, diagnostic laboratories, and a pharmacy.

Addressing the foundation laying ceremony, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “This foundation laying ceremony of AIIMS Rewari is in line with the government’s commitment to prioritise the public health infrastructure and strengthen citizen-centric health services through holistic development of the health sector.

“AIIMS Rewari will not only cater to the healthcare needs of Haryana but will also create jobs for the youth and provide them with opportunities to pursue medical education.”

Opening of this AIIMS is a significant step towards providing specialised healthcare services in Haryana.

According to the Indian Government, AIIMS Rewari is set to improve healthcare access for the underprivileged in remote areas of the state, leveraging its digital health infrastructure for community outreach.

The AIIMS Rewari project is part of the Indian Government and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme to address regional imbalances in specialised health services and enhance medical education facilities.

In April 2023, the government opened the first AIIMS in the north-east region of Guwahati, Assam.
