Sunnybrook’s new Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre has started its first full day of operations, marking a significant advancement in the field of patient care and interdisciplinary research in Canada.

This facility is designed to collectively treat physical and mental health, revolutionising the approach to complex brain disorders such as mood and anxiety disorders, dementia, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre president and CEO Dr Andy Smith said: “The dedicated team in the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program are trailblazers; from early breakthroughs in neuroscience to the development of leading technologies like rTMS and Focused Ultrasound, we will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.”

Sunnybrook Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program chief Dr Nir Lipsman said: “The new Hurvitz Centre embodies everything we strive to do in neuroscience, bringing together the brightest minds, from all brain disciplines, under one roof and focused on improving the lives of the patients we have the privilege to care for.”

Spanning 120,000ft², the three-storey Hurvitz Centre is equipped with 47 private inpatient beds.

This encompasses 28 adult inpatient rooms, nine psychiatric intensive unit rooms, and ten youth inpatient rooms, all designed to accommodate more patients.
