Geisinger is set to expand surgical services in Lewistown, central Pennsylvania, US and improve healthcare accessibility in the region.
The emphasis will be on interventional pain, ophthalmology, and various outpatient surgeries.
Located in Mifflin County, the Geisinger Surgery Center – Highland Park will offer outpatient services and create additional capacity within the main surgical suite of Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.
The expansion aims to enhance access to ambulatory procedures in a modern outpatient setting and accommodate the growth of services such as total joint replacement, spine, urogynaecology, endoscopy, general, and colorectal surgeries.
The $6.5m project is expected to create 13 new jobs and provide care to 2,300 patients annually.
Western Region chief administrative officer Kirk Thomas said: “Geisinger continues to support our teams, facilities, and programmes here in Lewistown.

By GlobalData“We’re investing in high-quality programmes that provide care to meet our patients’ needs right where they live. We’re also investing in our community and that is the heart of what we do.”
Geisinger’s investment in the Lewistown area earlier included revamped space for nephrology and hematology-oncology care at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.
Besides, it involved the acquisition of the former Bon Ton building for the expansion of the Geisinger School of Nursing.
The new surgery centre will feature five pre- and post-surgery bays and two operating rooms, increasing the total number of operating rooms on the hospital campus to eight.
Kirk further noted: “This facility will be truly comprehensive, and patient focused, allowing our neighbours to receive state-of-the-art care options here in Mifflin County.”
The facility is expected to open early next year.
