Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, California, US, has initiated an expansion and modernisation project, valued at $880m, with the aim of enhancing patient experience.

This initiative is set to bring more accessible care services to the community and reduce wait times by updating the hospital campus, particularly the emergency department.

Preparatory work at the site in front of the hospital has already commenced, with plans to begin laying the foundations this summer.

Geisinger president and CEO Terry Gilliland said: “This is a transformative project that continues Abigail Geisinger’s legacy of bringing the best care to our neighbours across the region.”

The expansion’s focal point is the establishment of an 11-storey tower close to the hospital’s forefront.

This tower will house a new spacious emergency room, doubling the current area and increasing the bed capacity from 45 to 60.

The hospital will also transition to all private rooms for adult medical-surgical units, offering privacy for patients and their families.

In addition, the tower will include modernised operating suites and intensive care units.

The project also encompasses infrastructural enhancements, such as a new multi-level parking garage adjacent to the tower.

The Danville campus has already improved traffic flow with a recent road project in preparation for the upcoming construction.

Geisinger executive vice-president and chief operating officer Megan Brosious said: “At a time when many rural communities are losing access to health care services, we’re committed to investing in the health of our community.

“Our neighbours have the benefit of receiving a level of care close to home in the kind of facility they would otherwise have to travel to cities like Philadelphia or New York to find.”

Geisinger’s expansion will complement the services provided at other regional facilities, including Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital and Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital.

The new tower will start welcoming patients by 2029.
