The Western Australia (WA) Government has broken ground on the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment project with the commencement of main works.

With an investment of approximately A$166.1m ($110.8m), the project will mark the hospital’s biggest upgrade since the early 2000s.

As part of the project, the hospital will receive a new intensive care unit (ICU) located, alongside an enhanced high-dependency unit (HDU) and an expanded emergency department (ED).

The upgrade will also deliver new integrated mental health services, including a mental health unit for short stays and an adult mental health inpatient unit.

These enhancements will provide the latest healthcare infrastructure and technology.

As the managing contractor for the redevelopment project, Multiplex has already begun the construction process, which is expected to employ more than 800 workers throughout the project’s duration.

The company was chosen as the preferred contractor for the Geraldton Health Campus project in December last year, months after the government initiated the request for proposal stage in May 2023.

According to the WA Government, this redevelopment will offer opportunities for Aboriginal businesses via various subcontracts.

Preparatory work for the project has been completed, including the reconfiguration of the main entrance, the addition of 400 car bays, and a new ambulance entry.

WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said: “This major investment will improve access to important health services, including an expanded emergency department, new intensive care unit, and mental health service.

“It’s an investment in our future to ensure Mid-West patients have access to the highest quality healthcare for years to come.”

WA Premier Roger Cook added: “Today is a significant day for Geraldton, with ground officially broken on the main works of this A$166.1m upgrade. Everyone deserves high-quality healthcare, regardless of where they live, and this project will benefit locals for decades to come.”
