Google Cloud has unveiled new generative AI (gen AI) tools for healthcare and life sciences companies to reduce their administrative burden and enhance patient outcomes.
These developments were announced at the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition.
The tech giant has launched ‘Vertex AI Search for Healthcare’, which is designed to help developers in creating better assistive technologies that reduce the administrative load on clinicians/healthcare workers.
This tool facilitates gen AI-powered searches across various data types, including Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources data and clinical notes.
The service is particularly adept at navigating scanned documents, electronic health record data, and other clinical data, enabling healthcare applications to present information to clinicians, eliminating the need to sift through extensive notes.
Besides, this tool is integrated into clinical workflow tools via configurable cloud APIs, allowing clinicians to ask and receive answers to complex medical questions directly within their workflow.

By GlobalDataOne of the features of Vertex AI Search is its ability to reference and link to the data points behind its answers, adding a layer of transparency and reliability while mitigating the risk of inaccurate responses.
It also works in tandem with Healthcare Data Engine (HDE), streamlining search and summarisation without custom integrations.
When used with MedLM tools, healthcare organisations can find pertinent answers to intricate medical questions both from MedLM and within the patient’s medical record.
Google Cloud Healthcare Strategy & Solutions global director Aashima Gupta said: “Vertex AI Search for Healthcare is already making a difference for healthcare organisations by helping ensure clinicians have right information and insights at right time to inform decisions and improve the overall quality of patient care.”
Google Cloud also announced a new consumption-priced managed service of HDE and its expanded international availability with new features, including simplified management and streamlined pricing.
Furthermore, Google Cloud added two new features to MedLM, a set of foundation models tailored for healthcare use cases.
The features include – MedLM for Chest X-ray, which assists in classifying chest X-ray images, and a task-specific API, ‘Condition Summary’ for providing a chronological list of patient conditions with AI-generated summaries.
Google Cloud plans to further expand MedLM suite’s functionality in the coming months.
