Google Cloud is set to invest $100m in telehealth solutions provider Amwell to scale its telehealth portfolio for providers, insurers and patients in existing and new markets.

The investment, subject to closing of Amwell’s initial public offering, is part of the companies’ strategic alliance to expand virtual care, patient and clinician experiences.

As part of the multi-year collaboration, the partners will leverage their respective capabilities, including Google Cloud artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, to offer new healthcare solutions.

The focus will be on technologies for automated waiting room and checkout, automated language translation services, and assisting payers and providers in routine tasks, among others.

Also, the companies aim to facilitate healthcare to seniors and patients with chronic illness in a new approach that will not compromise care quality or user trust.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said: “This is a critical partnership for the healthcare industry and has the potential to dramatically transform the telehealth space through the use of modern cloud technologies.

“We are thrilled that together we can bring groundbreaking digital health solutions to so many providers, patients, and health plans across the globe. Our joint work will drive innovation in health in a new and powerful way.”

Under the alliance, Amwell will be Google Cloud’s preferred global telehealth platform partner, while Google Cloud will serve as Amwell’s preferred global cloud platform partner.

Amwell will move its video performance capabilities onto Google Cloud’s cloud platform for its new and also existing customers worldwide.

Amwell chairman and CEO Ido Schoenberg said: “We chose Google Cloud as our strategic partner because of their phenomenal people, superior products, and open approach to partnering.

“Together, we will be able to offer an incredible array of integrated capabilities and help millions of people around the world access better care. Our collaborative work could literally democratise healthcare.”

Amwell delivers telehealth solutions for more than 2,000 hospitals and 55 health plan partners.
