France-based cancer centre Gustave Roussy has announced the launch of a new cancer centre in Egypt, under its subsidiary Gustave Roussy International’s brand licence.
The centre in Cairo, previously known as Dar Al-Salam-Hermel Hospital, has been rebranded as Gustave Roussy International Egypt following a partnership with Elevate.
The collaboration was confirmed with the signing of a joint declaration between Egypt and France, witnessed by both President Emmanuel Macron and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Welcoming its first patients on 8 April 2025, Gustave Roussy International Egypt is expanding its infrastructure with two new buildings to increase patient capacity.
The partnership involves joint governance between Gustave Roussy International and Elevate, with the Egyptian government upgrading infrastructure, Elevate managing the facility, and Gustave Roussy providing oncology expertise.
The centre aims to incorporate advanced technologies in radiotherapy and genomics to offer treatments.
This opening is part of Gustave Roussy International’s strategy to establish international partnerships in the Middle-East, Europe, and Asia.
With over 300 beds planned, Gustave Roussy International Egypt will treat all types of adult cancer, prioritising haematology and breast cancer.
It will aim to provide care, especially to public sector patients, who will make up 70% of the beneficiaries.
The partnership also encompasses a training programme to elevate the skills of Egyptian professionals in oncology.
Gustave Roussy CEO Fabrice Barlesi said: “This partnership is the embodiment of our mission to disseminate our expertise beyond our borders, to fight cancer more effectively on an international scale, particularly in areas where cancer care provision is not fully structured.
“Thanks to our collaboration with the Arabic Republic of Egypt and Elevate, we are laying the foundations for a first centre of excellence in Egypt, combining care, research and training, the first initiative in a series of international collaborations to come.”
In August 2023, Gustave Roussy expanded its collaboration with healthcare software company SOPHiA GENETICS.
