US-based Harbor Regional Health has decided to extend its 33-year collaboration with MEDITECH for modernising the delivery of care and improving the patient experience.

It has implemented the Expanse electronic health record (EHR) system through the cloud-based MEDITECH-as-a-Service (MaaS) subscription model.

The strategy is designed to reduce the duration and expenses linked to the hosting, acquisition, safeguarding, and upkeep of a scalable platform, thereby improving long-term sustainability.

With the adoption of Expanse EHR, Harbor Regional will replace other disparate EHRs with MEDITECH’s integrated Expanse Ambulatory and Home Care offerings.

Furthermore, the organisation plans to employ MEDITECH’s Traverse Exchange interoperability network to enable the free exchange of data with other hospitals and healthcare establishments.

Harbor Regional Health information technology director Brad Wallace said: “By removing the need for interfacing between the hospital and clinics, we eliminate duplicated patient records and reduce the operational overhead associated with interface management. Providers gain comprehensive visibility across the entire care continuum, which supports clinical training.

“The ability to personalise workflows with Expanse also allows end users to configure their workspace without IT intervention, and the browser-based architecture provides secure access from any device and location.”

The Expanse platform is poised to enhance clarity throughout the full spectrum of healthcare provision, encompassing diagnostic laboratories, medical imaging, emergency departments, and surgical procedures.

Moving to a unified patient portal is anticipated to bolster patient involvement by providing easier access to health data and provider messaging.

Furthermore, the centralised reporting capabilities of the Expanse platform will enable Harbor Regional to measure the impact of proactive interventions for patients at risk for chronic conditions.

In March 2025, Citizens Memorial Hospital in the US collaborated with Unite Us, a social care technology provider, to integrate the Meditech Expanse EHR with a referral system.
