Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network (AHN) have announced the official opening of the new 160-bed AHN Wexford Hospital to residents of communities north of Pittsburgh in the US.
HKS served as the architect for the $313m, 345,000-square-foot AHN Wexford Hospital, and Gilbane/Massaro as the lead construction partner.
AHN president and CEO Cynthia Hundorfean said that the new facility investment is part of its multi-year strategy to improve access to quality, patient-centered health care services in the Western Pennsylvania region.
Highmark Health president and CEO David Holmberg said: “In 2014, we opened the AHN Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion, followed shortly thereafter by our Pediatric Orthopedic Institute across the street.
“Just last March, we christened in McCandless our fourth neighborhood hospital, and we are now poised to bring our most ambitious investment yet to life for this region with the opening of AHN Wexford Hospital.”
Expected to open to patients in the coming weeks, pending the state licensing, AHN Wexford Hospital will have an emergency department providing 24 beds with specialised paediatric and behavioral health rooms, operating rooms with minimally invasive robotic surgery capabilities.
It will also include a cardiac catheterisation lab and hybrid OR, a short-stay observation unit, an adult intensive care unit, advanced diagnostic imaging, among others.
Additionally, the hospital will provide comprehensive care for women and infants, high-risk obstetrical services and a Level II neonatal intensive care unit.
Set to be the network’s fifth obstetrical hospital, AHN Wexford will join obstetrical facility AHN West, AHN Forbes in Monroeville, AHN Jefferson in Jefferson Hills and AHN Saint Vincent in Erie.
For women, the services offered by the hospital will include gynecological oncology, advanced breast care, urogynecology and minimally invasive techniques for surgical procedures.
It will also offer specialty care in cancer, neurology, cardiology, radiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology and orthopaedics, and more.
AHN Wexford is clinician-led with Allan Klapper serving as president, Katie Farah as chief medical officer and Amy Cashdollar as chief operating officer.
The all-private inpatient rooms at AHN Wexford Hospital, which is expected to have on staff over 750 healthcare professionals, have ample space for patient visitors.
With the touch of a button, patients can control their own room temperature, lighting and entertainment and select their meals from a room service menu.
The hospital’s third level features the Mario Lemieux Foundation Healing Terrace – an outdoor greenspace.
AHN Wexford Hospital is connected to the AHN Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion which offers outpatient health services.
AHN Wexford Hospital and the Health + Wellness Pavilion are powered by an 18,000-square-foot, two-storey power plant installed by Peoples Natural Gas.
