Spain-based Hospital La Fe in Valencia is expanding its telehealth and telemonitoring programme using the Masimo W1 advanced health tracking watch.

The watch, which provides accurate and continuous measurements of key physiological parameters, integrates with the existing Masimo SafetyNet remote patient management and telehealth platform.

Hospital La Fe has been utilising Masimo SafetyNet with Radius PPG tetherless monitoring for its post-surgical patients since last year.

Masimo founder and CEO Joe Kiani said: “Hospital La Fe has long set the bar for successful use of telehealth and virtual care, long before the pandemic.

“We were gratified that they chose Masimo SafetyNet as the platform for their postsurgical home monitoring programme, helping them send patients home sooner and keep track of patient status to head off postoperative complications more proactively.

“Masimo W1 will allow Hospital La Fe clinicians to collect a rich set of insightful baseline data for their preoperative patients, allowing them to better understand what is normal and what is not for each patient, prior to their undergoing invasive treatment.”

Headed by surgical director Dra M. Argente, the hospital’s surgical team plans to provide patients scheduled for elective surgery with Masimo W1 watches prior to their procedures.

The objective is to enhance prehabilitation by analysing heart rate variability data collected by the watch. Masimo W1 is not cleared for medical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US.

Hospital La Fe head of perioperative medicine in the department of anaesthesiology Oscar Díaz Cambronero said: “Implementing Masimo SafetyNet remote monitoring solutions in an enhanced recovery pathway programme in Hospital la Fe in Spain is allowing pro-active diagnosis of postoperative complications, improving patient safety and early hospital discharge in selected surgical patients.

“This future project will test the impact of telemonitoring with Masimo W1 in the preoperative setting for upgrading prehabilitation and improving patient condition and engagement.”
