Huntsville Hospital and construction company Robins & Morton have begun a $150m vertical expansion of the Madison Street Tower in Huntsville, Alabama, US.

The expansion comprises a 154,000ft² five-storey development and will introduce 120 additional beds to the hospital.

This project also includes the establishment of cardiothoracic and neuro intensive care units specifically designed for neurosurgical and stroke patients.

In recent years, Huntsville Hospital expanded its service offerings through the establishment of the Huntsville Hospital Health System.

Huntsville Hospital Health System (HH Health System) president and CEO Jeff Samz said: “Expanding the Madison Street Tower will give us the space to meet the advanced health care needs of North Alabama and southern Tennessee for decades to come.”

The expansion also includes three floors dedicated to new acute medical spaces and an upgraded emergency department vehicle entrance.

In addition to the new construction, the project will remodel 70 existing rooms for patients from double to single occupancy, increasing the hospital’s total bed count to 931 from the current 881.

Robins & Morton division manager Mitch Coley said: “This project marks another chapter in our longstanding relationship with HH Health System as we work to deliver this important project for our community.

“The hospital’s tower expansion will have a lasting, positive impact for many years ahead.”

The completion of the expansion is projected for 2027. Robins & Morton originally constructed the tower in 2006 and is now serving as the general contractor for this project.

Chapman Sisson Architects has been selected for the expansion’s architectural design.

In 2023, Robins & Morton partnered with AdventHealth to open a new four-storey hospital in Palm Coast, Florida.

The AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway Hospital features five operating suites, an emergency department, and an outpatient lab.
