Two Italian hospitals have awarded tenders to diagnostics company Gradientech and its exclusive distributor in Italy, a.d.a. SRL, for the implementation of the QuickMIC system.

The ultra-rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) technology is designed to expedite the treatment of sepsis by providing results directly from blood culture samples in just two to four hours.

Azienda USL Valle d’Aosta in Aosta and P.O. Michele e Pietro Ferrero in Alba are integrating QuickMIC into their clinical workflows to enhance the AST process for sepsis samples.

The systems, already installed at both hospitals, are currently being incorporated into their routine clinical practices.

a.d.a. SRL managing director Andrea Grillo and scientific director Pietro Lombardi said: “This strategic win marks a major step in expanding the footprint of QuickMIC in Italy and highlights the growing recognition of the clinical and operational value of rapid AST in combating infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

“QuickMIC delivers precise and accurate AST results in just 2–4 hours, which is essential for confirming and adjusting antimicrobial treatment in a timely manner.”

QuickMIC’s ability to deliver precise antibiotic susceptibility testing outcomes swiftly aids clinicians in making prompt and effective treatment decisions for sepsis patients.

The system’s scalable design ensures it is an accessible solution for diverse healthcare settings, from small to large hospital laboratories.

While QuickMIC and its gram-negative panel hold the CE mark and are accessible in Europe, they are not available for sale in the US yet.

Gradientech co-founder and CEO Sara Thorslund said: “Winning these tenders is a strong endorsement of our technology and our mission to accelerate access to life-saving sepsis diagnostics. It also shows that we can meet the needs of hospitals and laboratories of varying sizes with the modular setup of QuickMIC.

“The Italian market is proving to be at the forefront of adopting rapid AST diagnostics to improve patient outcomes — progress that is undoubtedly driven by the excellent work of a.d.a. and their experienced team in Italy.”
