The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, a division of McLaren Health Care, has opened its new facility in Dearborn, Michigan, US.

The institute is set to offer a wide range of services for various cancer types, including treatments and clinical trials.

Situated at 18800 Hubbard Drive, the Karmanos Cancer Institute-Dearborn occupies the building’s main floor and is designed to cater to patients with gynaecologic, breast, head and neck, and genitourinary cancers, among others.

Its offerings are further enhanced by the provision of breast health services, including 3D mammography in a dedicated women’s corridor.

The team at the centre is supported by Dr Oscar Raul Signori, a medical oncologist specialising in breast, head and neck, and genitourinary cancers.

Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Cancer Network president Brian Gamble said: “With the opening of our new ambulatory clinic in Dearborn, we are able to bring the specialised services and patient care of an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centre to the residents of Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and surrounding areas. What sets us apart is our cancer-only focus, access to world-class specialists, and clinical trials.”

Post-renovations, the nearly 5,000ft² space now features eight infusion bays, a negative pressure room for isolating patients with airborne infections, six exam rooms, a compounding pharmacy for on-site medication preparation, and lab services.

The women’s corridor is equipped with a 3D mammography unit, staffed by female healthcare professionals, and will soon offer a space for breast ultrasounds as an adjunct screening to mammography, complete with private dressing and waiting areas.

Patients will also benefit from specialised treatments available through the institute’s headquarters in Detroit.

These include CAR-T cell therapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, proton therapy, and the new FDA-approved TheraBionic P1 device to treat hepatocellular carcinoma.
