UAB Health System affiliate Medical West Hospital Authority has started the construction for a healthcare facility in the US state of Alabama with an official ground-breaking ceremony.

The new nine-storey structure will serve as its replacement facility and is expected to open in 2024.

Located at 4501 Bell Hill Road, the new hospital will cover a 412,000ft2 area. It will have 200 beds and will also feature a five-storey medical office building.

The new Medical West Hospital will feature advanced imaging technology, a new surgical and endoscopy suite and additional intensive care beds.

Federal agency USDA has agreed to fund the $400m project.

The project is also supported by Concourse, Raymond James, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, GNC, and Maynard, Cooper & Gale.

CBRE Healthcare is serving as the project manager, while Brasfield & Gorrie has been appointed as the general contractor.

CCI, Bhate Geosciences and Building & Earth have been selected as the site engineers, with HKS and KPS were finalised as the architects of the development.

Medical West said that it has been planning for a replacement infrastructure for several years.

Medical West CEO Keith Pennington said: “Our current facility was built in 1964 and although multiple renovations have been made throughout the years, we knew that a new facility would have to be part of our future growth plans.
