US-based health system Mercy has announced its intention to build a 75-bed, next-generation hospital in Wentzville, Missouri.

The health system has filed a letter of intent with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for the new hospital.

Estimated to cost $650m, the project will result in a 483,000ft² medical complex on 60 acres of land near the intersection of Interstates 64 and 70.

Mercy claimed that this healthcare facility will be the first completely new, acute-care hospital campus being developed in the state since 2015.

This new facility is being established to address the population growth in Missouri’s tri-county area, which comprises St Charles, Lincoln, and Warren counties.

These counties are among three of the state’s top seven fastest-growing counties, as per the US Census Bureau, with the population in the area projected to grow by nearly 9.5% to over 500,000 residents by 2032.

The development of this hospital is expected to create several long-term healthcare jobs, including roles for primary care physicians, nurses and specialists, as well as support services.

Mercy said that its officials will also engage in roundtable discussions, offering the public and community leaders a chance to provide input on the new hospital and the expansion of healthcare services.

The project further promises to deliver local, union construction jobs, with the work anticipated to span around four years.

Currently, when residents from the tri-county area are admitted to a hospital, 18% seek care at a Mercy hospital, the health system claimed.

Many St Charles County residents already utilise Mercy doctors and services, and the new location in Wentzville will significantly reduce travel time to access these services.

Mercy president and CEO Steve Mackin said: “Now is the time to invest in the future and better serve our patients closer to home. Our data shows us many Mercy patients travel, sometimes more than an hour, from Lincoln and Warren counties into St Louis County.

“The need for this facility, while significant today, will only increase as projected growth continues.”
