British company Morgan Sindall Construction’s Southern Home Counties Business has been chosen to work on the second phase of the expansion project at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham, Sussex, England, UK.

The expansion project has been procured through the UK’s procurement specialist SCAPE for the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

It builds upon the previously completed Phase I, which saw the establishment of a multi-million-pound Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Southlands Hospital.

This CDC is already serving patients with advanced diagnostic equipment such as CT and MRI scanners along with three dedicated X-ray rooms.

Since the Southlands CDC opened in October 2023, it has served around 30,000 patients.

Under Phase 2, the construction company will be responsible for the expansion of this CDC by adding more facilities and spaces.

The work will mainly include the construction of four new ultrasound rooms, two lung function test rooms, a specialised gynaecological treatment area and two echo treatment rooms.

These new facilities will be constructed after the demolition and removal of the existing old structure at the Southlands Hospital site.

In addition, the project involves reconfiguration of an existing X-ray section to further enhance the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities.

The expansion will not only increase clinical space but also add ancillary facilities such as waiting areas, reception areas, office spaces, cleaning stations, medical storage, and restrooms.

Preliminary works for Phase II began in January, focusing on enabling works, site setup, foundations, underground drainage, and installation of internal block walls.

The expansion is expected to conclude later this year, with the NHS Trust planning to fully utilise the centre by late 2024.

Morgan Sindall Southern Home Counties area director Guy Hannell said: “The new Community Diagnostic Centre is a brilliant community asset. It brings a high-quality diagnostic service to the heart of the local area, helping better assess those in critical need while also vastly reducing waiting times.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and SCAPE throughout this project, and to seeing the new centre in action once delivered.”
