The Hague, Netherlands-based clinical hospital Haaglanden Medical Centre (HMC) has secured a €110m ($118.74m) loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The capital will be used to upgrade HMC Westeinde and HMC Antoniushove, two of its main locations.

Additionally, a healthcare hub will be established in partnership with other healthcare providers to serve the Benoordenhout-Scheveningen area.

EIB vice-president Kris Peeters said: “This transaction shows how relevant European financing is for the Netherlands.

“The EIB has financed university hospitals, general hospitals, and top clinical ones like HMC for several years now.

“We are glad that, as Europe’s climate bank, we can support both top-quality healthcare and sustainability measures at the same time, showing that one does not exclude the other.”

The focus of the project will be on energy efficiency and sustainability, with a target of reducing CO₂ emissions by 64%.

The EIB said that it has been actively financing healthcare projects in the Netherlands, including top clinical hospitals.

HMC board member Martijn Wiesenekker said: “We are very happy with the official confirmation of this EIB financing.

“Apart from the funding itself, it also shows trust in the plans and financial position of HMC.

“In the end, the most important thing is that these resources allow us to make crucial investments to continue to guarantee care for all residents of Haaglanden and the surrounding area.”

HMC provides a wide range of medical services to the residents of The Hague and the surrounding metropolitan area.
