Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) in Canada has announced that the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) in Grimsby is expected to open on or around 27 October this year.

This date coincides with the 76th anniversary of the existing hospital’s inauguration.

HHS president and CEO Tracey MacArthur said: “The new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is a testament to the dedication of our community.

“Together, we’ve built more than a hospital – we’ve built a future for local, high-quality care that will serve generations to come.”

HHS added that the project is approaching a key milestone, with substantial completion anticipated on or around 21 July 2025.

This stage will enable HHS to acquire the new facility and initiate final preparations for the official launch.

After substantial completion, HHS will begin relocating equipment and supplies into the new premises.

Staff and physicians will receive training on the latest technologies over 13 weeks to ensure they are familiar with the new setting before patient admissions commence.

The new WLMH will be opened gradually, following the guidelines established by the Ministry of Health.

This approach is part of the government’s standard procedure for post-construction operational planning.

The phased opening will allow HHS and the Ministry to effectively assess patient volumes. The new hospital will be almost 80% larger than the current facility, providing opportunities for service expansion as evaluated over time.

Considerable investments have been made by the Government of Ontario, West Niagara, regional municipalities, and the wider community.

This joint effort aims to create a new asset in the region’s healthcare framework to cater to the needs of a growing population.
