US-based integrated healthcare delivery firm Apollo Medical Holdings (ApolloMed) has agreed to provide its hospitalist services to Blue Shield of California members at hospitals the firm already services.

The agreement, which came into effect on 12 May 2014, covers Blue Shield policy holders in its PPO (preferred provider organisation) insurance plans.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two parties will work together in managing patients throughout the hospital stay.

After discharge, ApolloMed will provide Blue Shield members with follow-up care and prescriptions to ensure a smoother transition.

The scope of the agreement also includes extension of inpatient care offered by ApolloMed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for Blue Shield PPO, Exchange, Out of Network, and some health maintenance organisation (HMO) member patients.

Blue Shield regional medical director Marc Richmond said: "We look forward to collaborating with ApolloMed physicians on staff at these hospitals to effectively manage care and provide positive member experiences."

"We also enhance care by developing a transition plan for a timely discharge and appropriate outpatient follow-up care that could prevent hospital readmissions," Hosseinion added.

The company also provides services such as hospitalist, intensivist, physician advisor and consulting to more than 50 hospitals, independent physician associations and health plans in California.
