Canada-based Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and St Michael’s Hospital have selected Bondfield Construction to design, construct and finance the hospital’s expansion and renovation project.
Bondfield will design, build and finance the expansion and redevelopment project in Ontario for $301m, which will be paid out at substantial completion.
Ontario health and long-term care minister Dr Eric Hoskins said: "The expansion of St Michael’s Hospital is an important initiative, allowing the hospital to better manage high patient volumes in such a densely populated community of Ontario."
The project will comprise building a new 17-storey patient care tower at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets, in addition to the renovation of 150,000ft² existing space.
Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower wing is being designed for critically ill patients, which will include state-of-the-art operating rooms that will integrate medical imaging equipment such as MRIs, CT scanners and X-rays.
The new tower will also include modern facilities for orthopaedic surgery, oncology, coronary care and respirology. In addition, the project will include expansion of the current emergency department.
St Michael’s Hospital CEO Dr Robert Howard said: "Everything in the new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower has been designed, using the best evidence available, to care for critically ill patients as we seek to become the premier critical care hospital in Canada."
