DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Alabama, US, is planning to add a new emergency department, imaging and laboratory department and a critical care unit to its facility through an $8.7m investment.

The project will involve the development of 13 all-private exam and treatment rooms, a dedicated orthopaedics room, a trauma room, a pelvic exam room, a dedicated ENT room, two dedicated cardiac care rooms and three urgent care or "fast track" rooms for minor illness and injury.

The new imaging and laboratory departments will house two X-ray rooms, new nuclear medicine and lab facilities, and equipment including a new CT scanner and MRI.

The critical care department is designed with larger rooms to accommodate family members and efficient staff workflow.

Weigand Construction has been selected as the general contractor for the project, the hospital reported.

All the facilities are expected to be operational by the end of 2011.
