US-based MercyRockford Health System has unveiled plans to develop one hospital on two campuses in Rockford and the greater northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin region, with an investment of $400m.
MercyRockford plans to continue operating a robust hospital campus on its current N Rockton Avenue site.
In addition, MercyRockford intends to build a second campus on 263 acres at the intersection of E Riverside Boulevard and the I-90 interstate highway.
MercyRockford Health System was formed through the merger of Mercy Health System and Rockford Health System in January.
MercyRockford Health System president Javon Bea said: "MercyRockford Health System is embarking on the most exciting and impactful healthcare development in the 130 years since our two original hospitals were founded.
"This is the largest project ever in Rockford’s history and represents a leap forward in quality facilities, community economic growth and easy access from a large regional area."

By GlobalDataN Rockton Avenue campus will include 94 adult inpatient hospital beds, a comprehensive emergency department, convenient care walk-in clinic, cancer care and outpatient behavioural health services.
The campus will also include diagnostic services with lab and imaging, outpatient primary and speciality physician care clinics.
MercyRockford intends to centralise intensive care services and construct a destination campus on I-90 at E Riverside Blvd, which covers patients within the greater Rockford area.
The E Riverside Blvd destination medical centre campus will include 188 inpatient beds, expanded patient services.
It will also include a women’s and children’s hospital, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), paediatric emergency services and a level one trauma centre.
