A new unit for macular services has been opened at the University Hospital of Wales (UHOW), Cardiff, UK.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals and NHS organisation Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have jointly constructed the new unit at the hospital.

Currently, UHOW is treating about 600 patients a month and the expansion will allow for an additional 100 patients a week.

Through the creation of five one-stop clinic sessions, two virtual clinic sessions and two reporting sessions a week, the new unit will enable the hospital to manage different phases of the wet AMD disease cycle.

"This new unit will enable the macular team to meet patient demand and ensure that increasing numbers of wet AMD patients in the area receive the care that they need."

The two new interconnecting clean rooms will help in the treatment of patients requiring intra-vitreal injections, aswell as providing theatre space for complex eye procedures.

At the launch of the new site, consultant ophthalmologist Sanjiv Banerjee said: "This new unit will enable the macular team to meet patient demand and ensure that increasing numbers of wet AMD patients in the area receive the care that they need and reduce waiting times."

In the UK, around 20,000 people are diagnosed with wet AMD a year, with about 1,000 being in Wales.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK and Ireland managing director Frederic Guerard said: "Today’s launch is the result of a lot of hard work by a number of people.

"They all share the same dedication to the specialist care of people with eye conditions.

"These conditions can have a significant impact on patient quality of life if not appropriately treated and managed. We are proud to work with the NHS to identify solutions which address unmet clinical need and promote excellence in ophthalmology."
