St Jude Medical has presented positive results from a feasibility study of its Portico transcatheter aortic heart valve, conducted at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The Portico valve is made of bovine pericardial tissue.
Results demonstrated that the 23mm valve was successfully resheathed twice and found no clinical strokes, no vascular complications or paravalvular leaks after 30 days of implantation.
The aim of the study was to examine the technical feasibility, safety and device deployment features of the valve and a transfemoral delivery system.
A clinical trial in Europe is expected to start before the end of 2011.
