UAE-based integrated healthcare provider VPS Healthcare has entered a strategic alliance with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in the US to bring new paediatric clinical and research excellence to patients and physicians in the region.

In October, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish standards of excellence for paediatric care at VPS hospitals and clinics.

The new alliance is the first of several joint initiatives originating from the MOU and will offer families close-to-home access to world-class paediatric care.

It will also ensure that VPS paediatric patients who need more specialised treatment will have seamless access to CHOP’s main hospital in Philadelphia.

To provide the most advanced medical care to the children of the UAE and across the Middle East, VPS plans to set up a new specialist paediatric unit and intends to open in 2017.

Both VPS and CHOP will conduct a gap analysis of the current state of paediatric care in order to institute specific steps to improve local training, technology and treatments to provide world-class patient care in the UAE.

"We are thrilled to have the world-renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia help us better serve the healthcare needs of families in the region."

Analysis and continual evaluation is expected to improve local capabilities and inform the scope and range of specialised, critically needed pediatric care provided by VPS hospitals and clinics.

VPS Healthcare founder Dr Shamsheer Vayalil said: "We are thrilled to have the world-renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia help us better serve the healthcare needs of families in the region.

"This relationship sharpens our focus and commitment to raise the standards of medical care for our patients and the people of the Middle East who need it most, no more so than children, including those innocent victims of the continuing humanitarian crisis in other parts of the region."

In addition to the new facility, both parties will also provide medical education, training and conferences to optimise service lines.

The alliance will see VPS physicians engage in a mutually beneficial two-way dialogue and travel to CHOP to observe and incorporate their best practices and continuing education.

VPS provides services in the Middle East, Europe and India to a network of hospitals and chain of medical centers, pharmaceutical manufacturing and pharmacy retailers.
