Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust in the UK has unveiled Cantilupe Ward, a newly developed dementia ward designed to provide specialist care for older adults with dementia or complex mental health needs.

Part of the Stonebow Unit, the ward is a key component of the national Eliminating Dormitories project aimed at replacing dormitory-style accommodation in mental health facilities.

Cantilupe Ward marks the second of a £14.9m ($m) redevelopment project at the Stonebow Unit.

The project’s goal is to establish three mental health inpatient wards, each featuring private ensuite bedrooms, enhanced communal areas, and accessible outdoor spaces.

This initiative is expected to significantly improve patient privacy and dignity, thereby enhancing care and outcomes.

The ward’s design includes larger communal areas for dining and socialising, a female-only lounge, and a dedicated space for patients and families dealing with acute mental distress or end-of-life care. This space also offers a separate outdoor area and family room.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust medical director Dr John Devapriam said: “All aspects of the ward have been designed to maximise the therapeutic outcomes for our patients.

“Together with the specialist care provided by our teams, this will support our patients to reach their recovery goals quicker and reduce their length of stay in hospital.”

The new ward is claimed to be the fourth of five mental health wards managed by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust to benefit from the national investment aimed at eliminating dormitory-style rooms.

Work related to the Elgar Unit in Worcestershire was concluded last year, and Jenny Lind Ward at the Stonebow Unit opened in November 2022. Construction on Mortimer Ward is currently underway and is expected to be completed later this year.
