Canada’s Ontario Government has announced a C$1.3m ($902,739) investment to install a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at Erie Shores HealthCare.

Claimed to be Leamington’s first-ever machine, it is set to improve access to diagnostic imaging services and reduce wait times for the residents of Essex County.

Erie Shores HealthCare is a 72-bed hospital focused on patient-centric care and research. It has renovated approximately 2780ft² of space to accommodate the MRI machine, creating a dedicated suite for the community.

Ontario deputy premier and health minister Sylvia Jones said: “By investing in Erie Shores HealthCare’s first-ever MRI machine, our government is taking another step to make it easier and faster for more people and families in Leamington, and across Essex County, to access key diagnostic services in their community for years to come.”

The province’s funding will also be accompanied by an additional annual investment of C$540,800 to double the MRI suite’s operational hours.

This expansion will enable more than 4,160 more individuals to access necessary care promptly.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington Member of Provincial Parliament Trevor Jones said: “The addition of Erie Shores HealthCare’s first MRI machine marks a significant milestone for our community, improving access to advanced diagnostic tools close to home.

“This investment reflects our ongoing efforts to strengthen local health care and support the well-being of families and our communities for generations to come.”

The Ontario government is adding 50 new MRI machines to 43 hospitals across the province to help improve services.

In addition, the province is increasing the number of MRI and CT scans at community diagnostic and surgical centres annually by 100,000 to ensure wait times for these scans do not exceed 28 days in any region.
